Laura Mae Schaeffer
was born in a 2-room cabin in Hawkins County, Tennessee on March 19, 1936, the firstborn of John and Mary Parker who soon moved to southwestern Ohio.
She often spoke fondly of high school in Seven Mile. In 1955 she married Virgil Schaeffer, first living in a small camping trailer at Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois. After moving around the country for several years, they returned to Ohio, and about 45 years ago to Camden.
Laura greatly enjoyed foreign cultures, especially their music -- she often sang when doing housework. She hosted several high-school exchange students, taking them in as sons and daughters; and she later traveled to Europe and Thailand to visit them. She last worked at the Preble County Farm Bureau in Eaton.
For the last four years of her life, she resided at Woodland Country Manor. She suffered a stroke on her 90th birthday and passed away on March 30. She is survived by a son (Neal Schaeffer of New Mexico), a daughter (Kalea LaFever of Hamilton), four grandchildren, and several members of her extended family.
Her Memorial Service will be Wednesday, April 8, at 11AM at BALES FUNERAL HOME in Camden.
